Shōnai Sand Dunes

These sand dunes stretch about 35 km north–south. They were formed by sand that was carried by rivers, then moved by waves and strong seasonal winds from the continent. The dunes began forming about 8 thousand years ago, and since the 17th century (Edo period), Japanese black pine trees (Pinus thunbergii) have been planted to prevent the sand from being blown around. Melons, watermelons, and daikon radishes are grown here on the dunes.
