Mototaki Springs (Waterfall)

About a 750 m walk through the woods from the parking lot will bring you to a waterfall called Mototaki Springs. As its name suggests, this waterfall is actually spring water flowing directly out of the cliffside, the edge of where Mt. Chōkai’s lava once flowed. The waterfall is about 5 m tall and 30 m wide, and its water maintains a temperature around 10 ℃ throughout the year. In summer, the cold spring water and the warm air surrounding it clash to create a misty environment. Moss-covered volcanic rocks appear to rise from the mist as if floating, making a fantastic scene.

The scenery here was created over a long period of time by lava that erupted from Mt. Chōkai between 160 and 20 thousand years ago, and by the water that flows through it, cooling and springing out from underground. Please help protect the scenery and refrain from climbing on moss-covered rocks.

Aside from these springs, there is another waterfall further upstream named Mototaki Waterfall. The path to it is currently closed due to landslides.
