Takase Gorge is located at the southern foot of Mt. Chokai, about 350 m above sea level. The terrain of this area was created by lava that flowed from Mt. Chokai around 100,000 years ago. With clear streams of water flowing from the mountain, Takase Gorge is rich in natural beauty. A parking area and walking trails are maintained here, and visitors can enjoy hiking among the deciduous forests and wild vegetation, giant rocks, and waterfalls of various sizes.
The waterfalls of Takase Gorge—Kage-no-taki, Kami-no-taki, Yakushi-taki, Kenryū-no-taki, Shiraito-no-taki, and Ōtaki—all have their own unique appearances. These waterfalls are said to have been used as a place of training for those practicing Shugendō asceticism on Mt. Chokai.
