Behind Mitaki Shrine in Sakata City’s Kurokawa area lies Fudō Waterfall. Standing about 20 m tall, the water that flows over this cliff is abundant and never runs dry throughout the year.

The land around Fudō Waterfall was formed around 600 thousand years ago, in the earlier stages of Mt. Chokai’s volcanic activity. It is mostly made up of volcanic ash and other small materials ejected from the volcano.

As the water flows over the cliff, the rock divides it into three directions. Local people believe the waterfall brings luck and success, and many students visit with their parents during examination seasons.
