Dōhara Waterfalls

Two waterfalls flow from the side of a cliff, which formed at the end of the lava flow in an eruption around the Chokai Lake area between 160 thousand and 20 thousand years ago.
Instead of a mountain stream flowing over the cliff, these waterfalls spring directly from the mountainside at an elevation of 230 m.

The water temperature averages around 8.5 ℃, with a hardness of 11 mg/L and a low evaporation residue of 40–50 mg/L. It is light, plain-tasting soft water. Thanks to this, many people visit year-round to enjoy the water, even from outside the prefecture. Some say the water tastes different between the left and right waterfalls.

A small shrine sits between the two waterfalls. It is cherished by the local people, and designated as a Yamagata Prefecture Satoyama Environmental Conservation Area.
