The Motomachi area in central Yuza Town is located on an alluvial fan, or fan-shaped area, where the main stream of Gakkō-gawa River flows out of Mt. Chokai into the Shōnai Plain. As a result, groundwater is very abundant here and water pressure is high; if a well is dug just about anywhere in the area, water will spring out from the ground.
There are about 300 wells in the area, said to produce 4,200 tons of water per day. This water has long supported the lifestyles of local people as well as the lives of many living creatures. Some examples are the ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) and Japanese eight-barbel loach (Lefua echigonia) living in Yatsumen-gawa River, and the salmon laying eggs naturally near Asahi Bridge.
The Yuza Motomachi Springs (Machimeguri Park) run from in front of Yuza Station and along Gakkō-gawa River. Thanks to the kindness of the owners of 14 artesian wells, they have become a spring water walking course where visitors can experience local history and culture.
